The Grand Happiness Foundation was founded in 2011 as part of Grand Home Furnishings’s 100th anniversary celebration. Grand spent the year working closely with organizations, providing furniture and mattresses or volunteer time. It was an honor for us to assist these organizations, many of whom aren’t in the spotlight and all work hard year around with limited budgets.

The Grand Happiness Foundation was founded based on Grand Home Furnishings’ century-old belief that happiness begins in the home. And for the past year, our mission has been to bring happiness and hope to those in need, specifically focusing on the safety, health and education of women and children within our community.

As we have celebrated our 100th year of service, through executing 100 “Grand Gestures”, it is time now to move on to our 101st year where we will continue to share happiness throughout the home.

From furniture and mattress donations to gardening and painting, it has been an honor to spread happiness and lend a helping hand to those in need across Virginia, West Virginia and Tennessee.

Because we have been blessed with 100 great years, the Grand Gesture program has been just one of the ways that we have been able to give back and say “THANK YOU” for allowing us the opportunity to serve you for 100 years. We have all truly enjoyed serving our local organizations through the Grand Happiness Foundation.

Take a minute and check out the short video we made that highlights some of our favorite gestures over the past year. From all of us here at Grand, Happy New Year and here’s to many, many more!

It all started almost a year ago when it was decided that Grand would celebrate its 100th year of service by giving back to the community. Now as Grand has approached its 101st year, the Johnson City store is continuing on the year-long tradition with Boones Creek Middle School. Typically the foundation has helped women and children so this was a unique yet delightful change of pace for the staff and the community.

A little birdie told the Johnson City store that Boones Creek Middle School needed furniture for its entry foyer to create an inviting impression on visitors. As Grand has a history of creating a welcoming atmosphere in its stores, through its employees and with its furniture selection, this was a great task for the Johnson City crew. (more…)

It was another “grand gesture” on the part of Grand Home Furnishings.

“This is just our way to give back to our community locally and thank everybody for 100 years of support of Grand Home Furnishings,” said Colleen Price, the manager of the Waynesboro Grand Home Furnishings retail store, at the Waynesboro Senior Center, to which Grand had just delivered donated Snuggies, nutritional drinks, adult diapers and three rocking chairs.

Grand also brought along Santa Claus to pass out gifts to members of the Senior Center.

“Christmas is all about giving back and giving to other people. This is a great way for us to end our year and tell people thank you,” Price said. “The Snuggies will keep people warm. The rockers I’m sure will be put to good use. And we donated some time last week to wrapping gifts.

Mountain House had a problem. They had outgrown their old space. The good news is that they were getting a new larger home for their psycho-social rehabilitation day program. The move came about in anticipation of new members. With the bigger space and more members, Mountain House’s staff would grow, too. The bad news? With more room comes more space to fill. And since helping their members is  their first, second and third priority, getting new furniture just wasn’t high on their list.

Fortunately the Mountain House program, housed under the Blue Ridge Behavioral Healthcare umbrella, had a need we could help them with.  So, they enlisted the help of the Grand Happiness Foundation to help furnish the organization’s new place. (more…)

As August Worley softly moved back and forth in a rocking chair, she held baby Isabella near. The light rocking motion prompted Isabella to slowly close her precious little eyes and fall into a sleep, dreaming of special baby dreams.

Grand recognizes that a mother being able to rock her newborn to sleep is a very personal and touching act, so the Bristol store was able to gift the New Life Birthing Center at Regional Medical Center with brand new rocking chairs. Grand was also able to team up with the greatest gift-giver there is – Santa Claus! He arrived at the birthing center to help spread holiday cheer to moms and their little ones. (more…)

We’ve done some pretty big gestures throughout the year, including sending care packages to our local troops to planting gardens and beyond. But the Habitat for Humanity gesture was certainly the most grand!

Because Grand Home Furnishings has a successful mattress department, it was decided that taking advantage of this specific furniture success would benefit 10 Habitat for Humanity affiliates. So, families from West Virginia, Virginia and Tennessee were able to reap the benefits of this three-state Grand Gesture. (more…)

Grand Gesture Recipients Say Thank You

The Westlake store was paid a great visit by two bus-loads of students from Staunton River High School last week. As this high school was a gesture recipient during summer, the students wanted to say thank you! Jennifer Montgomery, Westlake store Assistant Manager, shares her touching story of the recent visit.

Who wouldn’t give all the Whos in Whoville to avoid the annual resurrection of “O Tannenbaum”?

While most have yet to drag their Christmas decorations down, or decide on holiday gifts for family or donations to the less fortunate, United Way of Southern West Virginia has a solution: The annual Wonderland of Trees auction happening tonight at 6 p.m. at Crossroads Mall can resolve both personal dilemmas and ease a needy family’s hardship in the process.

The Grand team decorated their tree in a WVU theme. Winner with the highest bid for this tree will get the tree, a WVU framed picture and WVU bean bag!

“It’s a time of fun for everyone who comes out, and it’s a win-win for everyone too,” says United Way of Southern West Virginia Executive Director Margaret O’Neal.

Have you ever experienced perfect timing? This recently happened between Grand’s Valley View store in Roanoke and Still Standing Outreach Ministries.

A Grand Valley View employee was recommending the Still Standing for a “Grand Gesture” at the same exact time that the organization sent Grand a letter asking for support. The two instances were pure coincidence, but worked out in everyone’s favor – perfect timing!

Still Standing Outreach Ministries is an organization serving Roanoke-based women who face obstacles such as homelessness, lack of employment and lack of job skills. (more…)

Our efforts to offer communities “Grand Gestures” on behalf of the Grand Happiness Foundation and Grand’s 100th anniversary made news and Bedford Domestic Violence Services benefited.  Director Leanne Dudley saw a news story about the Westlake outlet store donating furniture to another service organization, so she took a chance and reached out.

“I’m always scouring for where’s the next resource or the next potential donor,” she said. “I thought we’d get a chair, if we were lucky.”

To her delight, the Grand Home Furnishings Outlet at Westlake was thrilled to do a “Grand Gesture” for the shelter, donating and delivering four twin mattress sets and four bunk bed mattresses to the Bedford Domestic Violence Services shelter.
